In 1974, Traffix CEO L. Chuck Snow started working in the for-hire trucking industry as an independent owner operator, hauling freight between Ontario and the US. He quickly noticed serious inefficiencies in the over-regulated industry, and decided to start a company that offered a way to fight those inefficiencies, and made trucking easier and more lucrative for drivers and owner operators.
And so, in 1979, Traffix was born.
Traffix was founded on a breakthrough idea: providing a unique load matching service to fill empty trucks with available loads, and maximize the carrying efficiency of round trips. Traffix matched returning empty trucks with available loads or part loads, and boosted efficiency and income for everyone involved. It became one of the first successful freight brokerage firms in Canada.
In 1988, Traffix opened its own terminal and started building a corporate fleet to keep up with client demands for
just-in-time deliveries and
delivery appointments. Today the Traffix fleet consists of 25 air ride tractors and 60 air ride logistics-equipped trailers. The company operates out of Milton, Ontario, and focuses on LTL cargo between Southern Ontario and the US. It still operates a viable brokerage operation to cover those areas that it doesn’t serve with its own fleet.
Traffix continues to meet the challenges of the trucking industry, and to find new ways of addressing those issues. For example, CEO Chuck Snow has embraced the idea of adding waterways to current cross-border freight routes. He sees it as a profitable answer to a number of issues: increased demand for goods at a time when there is an industry-wide driver shortage, pollution (ships use only 10 –20% of the energy required by trucks), and traffic and border congestion.
